Tailored environmental and planning advice for new energy development
Our expertise on renewable energy extends across all project stages from site selection, through Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA), to implementation. We advise many of the UK’s leading renewable energy developers, offering comprehensive support on projects across the UK. We have considerable experience of wind, solar and hydro projects, as well as being closely involved in offshore renewables.
We’re known for our careful approach to site selection and feasibility studies, our management of Environmental Impact Assessments, and our reliability as expert witnesses. We provide planning advice, landscape and visual impact assessments (LVIAs), ecological services and more. Our in-depth understanding of the planning systems in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland helps our clients through every stage of the planning process.
We offer the following key services:
- feasibility studies
- planning advice
- Environmental Impact Assessment
- Landscape and Visual Impact Assessment
- ecological impact assessment
- expert witness representation
- post-consent planning support and discharge of planning conditions
- environmental management plans and environmental monitoring
- visibility analysis and shadow flicker assessment
- GIS mapping, 3D visualisation and photomontages.

Clyde Wind Farm: EIA and EcOW
Clyde Wind Farm is one of the largest onshore wind farms in Western Europe. It has 152 turbines generating up to 350 megawatts (MW) which is enough to power over 200,000 households. LUC helped obtain consent, carrying out the Environmental Impact Assessment, including landscape, visual and ecological assessments, as well as acting as expert witness at Inquiry.
The Clyde site hosts various habitats and species of conservation concern. As ecological clerk of works (ECoW), we advised on water pollution prevention, peatland management and habitat and species conservation, to ensure that the environmental gains relating to green energy production were delivered, with minimal impact on native flora and fauna.
For expert ecological input into your development, please contact Steve Jackson-Matthews.
Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments and Expert Witness for Onshore Renewables
As LVIA experts, we’ve assessed the effects of all types of onshore energy developments, from wind and solar farms to hydro-power proposals and carbon capture plants, as well as the associated requirements for transport, borrow-pit and grid infrastructure. All work is handled in-house, including preparing digitally modelled zones of theoretical visibility (ZTV), and photomontages. We strongly influence project design and give vital advice on mitigation, reducing potential negative effects from the outset, and lowering consenting risks for developers. We also provide landscape and visual expert witness evidence at public inquiries, examinations and hearings, as well as help discharge planning conditions, through our landscape and habitat management plans.
Our input has proved decisive in numerous instances, for example the Clyde Wind Farm above, the TAN 8 Brechfa and Clocaenog Wind Farms in Wales, and Swinford Wind Farm in England, as well as many others across the UK.
