Navigating the planning system for independent and state schools.
There are increasing challenges thrown up by the planning system, creating tight constraints which make it difficult for many schools to grow, update and adapt their facilities. LUC advises on how to navigate these challenges in the most cost-effective and timely way, securing planning permission even in highly sensitive locations.
Our work encompasses:
- Masterplanning and landscape design
- Pre-application discussions
- Heritage assessments
- Ecology surveys
- Travel plans
- Environmental Impact Assessment, as well as landscape and visual impact assessment
- Coordinating and obtaining planning permissions
- Discharging planning conditions
Chigwell School is within the Chigwell Village Conservation Area, partially within the green belt and includes four listed buildings. Over some years, we’ve provided expert planning advice, successfully navigating the planning system and achieving permission for a floodlit all-weather pitch, a new pre-prep school, a grounds maintenance yard and building and a new Sixth Form Centre, supported by robust habitat, bat and arboricultural surveys. We are leading pre-application discussions for a new dining hall and restoration works to their listed buildings.
Chigwell Parish Council described the new Sixth Form Centre as “fitting to the fabric of Chigwell School, and in keeping with the Conservation Area”.
Byron Court Primary School
Byron Court is located within suburban neighbourhoods in Wembley, London. The site is extremely constrained, sitting within a perimeter block surrounded by housing and narrow streets. The London Borough of Brent appointed us to oversee the preparation and submission of an application to expand the school from 3-form entry to 5-form entry. The application generated a lot of attention prior to and post its submission with over 1,000 objections submitted.
“LUC has been a great asset to the project team. They have co-ordinated planning documents for two complex applications and led the design team through to the forthcoming planning committee. It is likely this will be achieved with no objections.
LUC has also worked on other high profile applications for Brent and I would have no hesitation in appointing them again” The Client, London Borough of Brent’s Capital Projects Manager.
