Maximising renewable energy potential.
We’re one of the UK’s leading experts in helping identify potentially suitable areas for renewable energy, assessing resource and capacity using GIS, and the environmental effects of onshore and offshore renewable energy developments.
We helped prepare the Department of Energy and Climate Change’s Renewable and Low Carbon Capacity Methodology, as referred to in the Department for Communities and Local Government’s Planning Practice Guidance. We also have extensive experience in developing and preparing planning policy guidance on renewable and low-carbon energy issues. This has included drafting renewable energy policies, SPDs and national planning guidance, including our work for the Welsh Assembly Government.
A key requirement of the national planning policy framework is to set a positive policy context for renewables. Our work helps local authorities to:
- identify which renewable energy technologies have the greatest potential in their area, taking into account a wide range of technical and environmental constraints;
- identify suitable locations for renewable energy – balancing the need to realise renewable energy potential while protecting the environment (including nature conservation, landscape and heritage assets).
We’ve completed renewable energy assessments for regional authorities, local authorities and protected areas. For professional guidance on your capacity for renewable energy development, please contact Kate Ahern, Sam Oxley, Sarah Young or Diana Manson.
