Bristol City Council has granted planning permission for the redevelopment of the Bristol Zoo Gardens site. Working alongside Perkins+Will Architects, LUC designed the landscape masterplan for the unique site in Clifton, Bristol.
The plans, which include building 196 new homes for Bristol (20% affordable), will also provide free public access to the gardens for the first time in 186 years.
Plans for the 12-acre site also include:
- Extensive managed gardens, including numerous existing mature trees and listed structures
- A large new children’s natural play area
- Re-modelled lake with boardwalk access and substantial wetland habitat creation

The design carefully considers the highly-valued existing trees and gardens, whilst providing significant numbers of new trees; ornamental and native planting; and meadow creation, as part of the proposals.
Our work brings new life to the gardens’ existing historical features, such as the Monkey Temple building, protecting them for future generations to enjoy. The iconic Zoo entrance building will become the Clifton Conservation Hub – including public café, toilets, exhibition space, education and meeting spaces.
