We recently completed a District Design Guide for New Development in South Staffordshire. The Council asked us to review and update the previous Village Design Guide, incorporating guidance on design for new developments within all settlements as well as the countryside.
South Staffordshire is a predominantly rural district on the edge of the West Midlands conurbation. Its distinctive sense of place largely derives from the historic function of the villages and their close ties to the surrounding landscape.
The design guide aims to ensure the character and identity of the district are retained and enhanced through development. It encourages good design that responds to its context, looks good, lasts well and is functional – whether contemporary or traditional.
The design principles are brought to life with illustrations and photographs, with examples of good practice in designing developments and a process section at the end to help decision-makers to deliver good design. The guide was informed by a workshop with officers from South Staffordshire.
