The Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) has launched the 'Planning is Global 3' publication at COP28.
Researched and written by LUC, the document explores global water challenges and the vital role planners can plan in addressing them.
LUC collaborated with RTPI members to show through nine case studies the crucial role of planning in tackling global water issues. The publication shares real stories illustrating planners' global impact, addressing challenges like water supply, flooding, and droughts. It highlights how planners can play a key role in addressing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
One example features climate-smart planning in Uganda, ensuring enough water and sanitation for a growing population. Another project in Bhutan showcases planners ensuring a safe water supply network and sustainable urban drainage as part of a new Structure Plan.
These stories demonstrate planners' global efforts, finding practical solutions to improve life and address water challenges in our changing climate.
“It was fascinating speaking to RTPI members from around the globe about the wide range of projects that planners are working on that involved water. The case studies highlight some fantastic examples of the value that planners can add to projects aimed at addressing some of the most complex water challenges facing us today.”
