Woodquay Park, a cherished green space northwest of Galway City Centre, is set to undergo a major revitalisation as Galway City Council has just submitted a planning application for its redevelopment.
This is a Part 10 application with planning permission being sought directly from An Bord Pleanála, the national independent statutory body for planning consent. This procedure was necessary due to the project’s proximity to the Lough Corrib Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The process has been guided by LUC’s teams and supported by our design services.
Bringing life back to city spaces
Woodquay Park, though popular with residents, has seen an increase in anti-social behaviour in recent years. As a result, local stakeholders and community members have pushed for redevelopment to encourage more positive use of the park and to enhance safety.
The proposed plans, developed by LUC, come at a time of significant urban renewal in Galway. Several other infrastructure and public realm improvements are underway, including efforts to improve mobility and green space access across Galway.
Improving connectivity
The park is a key stepping stone connecting the city centre and the River Corrib. Improving the connectivity of these areas aims to integrate the park into Galway’s broader active travel network, making it more accessible to both residents and visitors. In addition, other public realm initiatives like the Galway Public Realm Strategy envision improving access to waterside areas and transforming nearby Woodquay Square, which lies across from the park.
Sustainable redevelopment
Our plans for the redevelopment of Woodquay Park focus heavily on sustainability and climate resilience. The plans incorporate Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SuDS) and pollinator-friendly planting, reflecting a commitment to biodiversity and eco-friendly urban design. These features are intended to help the park meet future challenges related to climate change and environmental degradation.
Boosting tourism, enhancing communities
The City Council's proposals, which have received funding from the Fáilte Ireland Urban Animation Capital Investment Scheme, aim to boost sustainable tourism by enhancing Galway’s public spaces for both residents and visitors. The fund supports projects that reimagine urban areas and improve the visitor experience while preserving community benefits.
Designs for nature and community
The masterplan for Woodquay Park incorporates many aspects identified by local residents, such as the inclusion of natural play, performance spaces, and plentiful seating.
Our proposals will also create a more resilient green space through the incorporation of rain gardens (part of a comprehensive Sustainable Urban Drainage system) and biodiverse planting to encourage pollinators. The park will also provide a fitting new home for the Galway Orb, a sculpture commissioned for the Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture celebrations.
Sustainable, active green spaces
With its focus on sustainability, enhanced accessibility, and integration into Galway’s growing active travel infrastructure, the redevelopment of Woodquay Park is poised to play a strategic role in the city’s future, serving as an attractive and sustainable green space for both residents and visitors alike.
