We’re delighted that the £5million restoration at Cassiobury Park, Watford has completed on site, with a grand opening to the public by the Town Mayor on 1st July.
This was the culmination of four years’ design work and construction management by LUC as lead consultant. The Heritage Lottery Funded scheme aimed to restore and celebrate a multi-layered landscape rich in history which has been central to the fabric of Watford since the 17th century.
Cassiobury Park is a fascinating amalgam of former deer park, 18th and 19th century picturesque parkland and 20th century ‘Peoples’ Park’ overlay – model railway, Art Deco tearooms and hugely popular water play facilities. However aspects of the park’s heritage had become lost and it had suffered much wear and tear due to its considerable popularity. Recognising this, the council backed a project to regenerate the park, developing Lottery fund proposals with LUC.
We restored surviving historic features such as the monumental Lime Avenue and carriage drives and estate watermill ruins; recreated iconic features of the picturesque parkland such as the Rustic Bridge; restored key aspects of the ‘Peoples’ Park’ – the tea pavilion and garden, the Bandstand and completely refurbished the popular water play area allied to a new contemporary park hub building.
