LUC team joins record-breaking River Taff clean-up

Last week, our Cardiff team rolled up their sleeves to participate in a world record-breaking river clean-up on the River Taff. Together with 1,327 volunteers, we contributed to an extraordinary effort to remove litter and restore this vital waterway.

The clean-up exceeded the previous record of 329 people set on the River Ganges in India earlier this year, breaking it by an impressive 998 participants.

The event covered the River Taff from its source in Bannau Brycheiniog national park all the way to Cardiff Bay.

Our commitment to responsibility

At LUC, Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility (CSER) forms a central part of our identity. We actively commit to giving back through volunteering, sharing expertise, and supporting environmental protection initiatives.

Our participation in this river clean-up demonstrates our ongoing commitment to making a positive impact.

The team behind the clean-up

Organiser Kate Strong, an ex-triathlon champion, created the Taff Tidy project to raise awareness about river health.

Volunteers, including school children and community groups, collected litter at eight locations for one hour, with official Guinness World Records adjudicators monitoring the event.

Making a measurable difference

The clean-up will provide valuable data for researchers like Dr Numair Masud, a freshwater ecologist from Cardiff University, who will analyse waste samples to measure improvements in water quality.

"We need a collaborative solution, with a mixture of better regulation, enforcement, and education – not something any one organisation can do alone," said Rhian Thomas, NRW's Sustainable Water Manager, highlighting the need for long-term action.

LUC remains proud to contribute to this collective effort and looks forward to continuing our work protecting and enhancing the natural environment.

We believe that through collective action, we can make a meaningful difference to our waterways and the wider environment.
