LUC’s Stanmer Park Management and Maintenance Plan won the Landscape and Parks Management category at the recent 2023 Landscape Institute Award ceremony in London. The award celebrates excellence in the management of a place or landscape.
Stanmer Park, located on the edge of Brighton & Hove and within the South Downs National Park, covers 485 hectares of parkland, farmland, and woodland. A Grade II Registered Park and Garden, it features the iconic Grade I listed Palladian Stanmer House. The park boasts diverse habitats, historical elements, and a vibrant community promoting health, well-being, and sustainable living. Despite its charm, it was added to the Heritage at Risk Register in 2009 due to fragmentation caused by the A27 and housing development.
Following the successful National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) restoration of the park’s 20 hectare historic core area by LUC. Brighton & Hove City Council commissioned LUC to produce an updated Management and Maintenance Plan (MMP) for the park to secure remaining NLHF funding.
The MMP outlines a strategy to protect, conserve, enhance and align the park with the Council’s City Downland Estate Plan 2022 and Green Flag Award Criteria. It specifically targets addressing the park's Heritage at Risk status.
The action plan tackles critical sustainability issues, such as carbon neutrality, climate resilience, and healthy habitats. It aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, actively contributing to the targets for clean water, climate action, and preserving life on land.
The management of Stanmer Park, guided by the MMP seeks to enhance community accessibility, offer education, and boost economic growth, providing a sustainable green space model and source of city pride.
