Tubbercurry Public Realm Project granted planning consent

LUC is delighted to announce that the Tubbercurry Public Realm Project has secured planning permission.

This exciting development comes after a resounding display of community support, with an impressive 340 submissions endorsing the scheme.

LUC played a key role in the project, having previously formulated the Town Centre First plan for Tubbercurry, County Sligo. This project aligns with the Irish Government's nationwide initiative to revitalise rural towns and foster vibrant communities.

LUC's team, working collaboratively with various stakeholders, established a clear vision for Tubbercurry's development. The plan encompassed a range of improvements, including public realm enhancements, shop front revitalisation strategies, and proposals to utilise derelict properties and land.

The project prioritises strengthening local identity, creating attractive pedestrian-friendly spaces, boosting climate resilience, and invigorating the town's economic prospects. Community engagement is central to the project's success. LUC facilitated workshops where residents could share their insights and aspirations for Tubbercurry's future.

Researchers from the University of Strathclyde, funded by the EU's 'Demotec' initiative, played a crucial role in ensuring the community's voice was heard throughout the decision-making process. Through workshops, both online and in-person, a wealth of innovative ideas – 42 in total – were generated.

LUC then carefully assessed these ideas with the community's involvement, ensuring the most impactful proposals were incorporated into the final Tubbercurry Town Centre First Plan.

“We are thrilled to see the Tubbercurry Public Realm Project receive planning permission. This is a testament to the power of community engagement, the commitment and dedication of the Tubbercurry Town Team and LUC's collaborative approach. The project will not only enhance the public spaces of Tubbercurry but will also create a more vibrant and resilient town for residents and visitors alike. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this project will have on the community.”

Tubbercurry was one of 26 towns, representing each county in Ireland, chosen by the Government to benefit from the Town Centre First Policy. This policy envisions Irish towns as thriving, sustainable, and attractive places to live, work, and visit.

Building on the triumph of Tubbercurry, LUC is now leading similar initiatives in Blessington and Killala, where community consultations are well underway.

LUC is committed to shaping a brighter future for these towns.
