Creating a new regional park
National Trust commissioned LUC to develop a spatial framework for the 8 Hills Regional Park.
This framework will guide the creation of a new regional park on the outskirts of Birmingham, improving access to nature, enhancing biodiversity and creating a valuable green resource for local residents and the communities in Bromsgrove, Dudley and the south of Birmingham.
Shaping a greener future for Birmingham, Bromsgrove and Dudley
LUC's work on the 8 Hills Regional Park will create a space for people and wildlife to thrive.
By improving access, protecting habitats and promoting green infrastructure, as well as enhancing the recreational offer the regional park will benefit communities, nature and the wider environment.
Ensuring local voices are heard
LUC facilitated inclusive consultations, ensuring local residents and stakeholders had a voice in shaping the regional park's development.
This ensured the spatial framework reflects the needs and aspirations of the communities who will use it most.
Unlocking access to nature
Tackling known inequalities in access to natural greenspace, the spatial framework defines opportunities to connect communities to nature through new access points and routes and creating a more inclusive recreational offer.
LUC’s transport planners identified options to enhance public transport links to and through the area.
Building a connected network for nature
LUC's expertise in green infrastructure planning will ensure the regional park functions as a connected network.
This will be achieved by creating links between existing green spaces, promoting sustainable development throughout the region.
The park will also provide vital wildlife corridors, allowing species to move freely and enhancing overall ecological connectivity.
Next steps for the 8 Hills Regional Park
The framework created by LUC is a blueprint for the regional park's development.
The framework incorporated a review of governance models and provided planning policy recommendations for the incorporation of the regional park into Bromsgrove District Council’s Local Plan.
It outlines how the park can be brought to life, ensuring that residents of south Birmingham, Bromsgrove and Dudley can enjoy the benefits of this area for generations to come.
