Safeguarding a national treasure
The National Trust commissioned LUC to develop a comprehensive spatial plan for Ashridge Estate.
This plan aims to ensure the long-term health of the estate's internationally significant Beech woodlands while promoting public enjoyment of this special place.
Balancing recreation and conservation
LUC's work on the Ashridge Estate spatial plan goes beyond just creating a beautiful space for visitors. It's about achieving a delicate balance.
Our approach will safeguard Ashridge's irreplaceable habitats while creating new visitor hubs.
This will help distribute visitors more evenly across the estate, alleviating pressure on the vulnerable Monument Drive area.
Shaping a sustainable visitor experience
LUC's landscape architects are playing a key role in shaping the future of Ashridge Estate.
We're designing new visitor hubs that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally sensitive. This includes car parks, surfaced paths for better accessibility, and an improved visitor centre to enhance the visitor experience.
Ensuring a thriving natural environment
LUC's ecological expertise is crucial for the success of the Ashridge Estate project. Our ecologists are providing vital guidance on habitat creation and improvements.
This will ensure the long-term resilience of the estate's unique habitats, safeguarding the diverse plant and animal life that calls Ashridge home.
Safeguarding history
LUC's heritage team assessed Ashridge, dividing it into 15 zones based on historical character. We identified four key values for each zone: evidential, historical, aesthetic, and people value.
This informed the spatial plan, ensuring sensitive areas were protected while considering future access and development.
