A Boatman’s Journey – immersive digital storytelling to safeguard heritage
Showcasing heritage through digital storytelling
In collaboration with Waterways Ireland, LUC has redefined heritage preservation with the "Boatman’s Journey", an innovative StoryMap project funded by the Heritage Council of Ireland. This platform offers a captivating exploration of the Grand Canal, Ireland's engineering marvel completed in 1804, stretching 130 km from Dublin to Shannon Harbour.

A digital portal to Ireland’s past
Leveraging advanced GIS and 3D visualisation technologies, "The Boatman’s Journey" bridges the gap between Ireland's rich past and its modern audience. This immersive digital experience not only narrates the canal’s historical significance but also provides accessibility to archival treasures, including oral histories and a 3D model of the iconic 31M Barge (created by Lightroom 3D) and showcased in an immersive virtual environment (created using 3D Vista software).

Engaging communities, inspiring conservation
The project, launched during National Heritage Week 2024, attracted a lot of attention and even resulted in the discovery of additional new images, thanks to a former boatman’s family. This increased visibility and accessibility encourages the community, especially young people, to value and protect their environmental and cultural heritage.

Key benefits for heritage and education
Digital storytelling opens the door for wider audiences to explore and appreciate heritage, making it more accessible and raising awareness. By using digital platforms, this approach ensures the long-term preservation of cultural assets while supporting educational outreach. 3D models bring archival materials to life, transforming them into a living legacy that engages and inspires. This is not just a project but an ongoing journey to safeguard and celebrate our shared heritage.
