Empowering Local Planning Authorities
Natural England commissioned LUC to support ten Local Planning Authorities (LPAs) in applying the Green Infrastructure Framework (GIF).
LUC also delivered training sessions to support the successful delivery of green infrastructure. These explored important relationships between policy development, climate change, nature recovery and long-term stewardship.
Our work helped LPAs and other key stakeholders gain the confidence and knowledge to embed the GIF’s principles into local planning strategies and development projects.
Increased confidence in applying the framework
The project aimed to gather feedback from a wide range of stakeholders, including local authorities, developers, and environmental groups.
The project will have a positive impact on communities and nature by ensuring green infrastructure is a core consideration in local planning.
By providing LPAs with the tools and expertise they need to implement the GIF, LUC’s work is helping to create greener, healthier places for people and wildlife.
Services provided
- Training materials: LUC produced a range of bespoke training materials to provide practical advice and guidance on the GIF.
- Workshops: We delivered 20 workshops in total, covering a variety of topics such as data and mapping, applying the GI standards, and stakeholder awareness.
- Technical expertise: LUC’s team of experts provided technical guidance and support to the LPAs throughout the project. This included helping them to identify data gaps and develop strategies for addressing them.
- Development of resources: LUC produced several draft outputs that will be valuable for other local authorities looking to implement the GIF. These resources include a policy review checklist, a data and evidence checklist for GI Strategy and Policy, and a developer checklist for GI considerations.
LUC is confident that this project will empower LPAs to take a more strategic approach to green infrastructure planning.
By providing the support and resources that LPAs need, we can help to create a greener and more sustainable future for all.
