Delivering heritage regeneration
In 2013, LUC led a successful Heritage Lottery Fund application for the Stornoway Trust and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar to regenerate Lews Castle Grounds.
Our teams have since successfully overseen the delivery of the project.
We worked on many aspects ranging from planting to playground design.
Outstanding gardens and designed landscapes
Lews Castle is a gothic-revival-style castle dating back to the mid-1800s. Its grounds cover over 270 hectares and include woodland, parkland and gardens.
They have a long history as a public park for the nearby town and are an outstanding example of late-Victorian estates and heritage.
The input from our historic environment team on the bid application and delivery phase has ensured the character and heritage of Lews Castle have been preserved.
Project preparation
LUC initially prepared the Conservation Plan, Management and Maintenance Plan as well as the Proposed Development Plan for the site.
After a period of extensive community and stakeholder engagement, Planning and Listed Building consents were obtained before the project progressed to detailed design and construction.
Project delivery
Our team has since successfully administered the delivery phase on-site.
As part of the comprehensive landscape restoration programme, we worked on aspects as diverse as planting design, architectural metalwork, playground design and the restoration of 19th-century stonework feature walls.
