Restoring the rainforest
Commissioned by Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority (LLTNPA), LUC developed an action plan to restore the Atlantic rainforest around Loch Lomond.
The goal? To address the various threats to these rare and important habitats and create a thriving habitat for native flora and fauna.
Nature's recovery, community benefits
This project promises significant ecological improvements alongside social and economic benefits for surrounding communities.
The restored rainforest will attract visitors, boost nature tourism, and create volunteer and job opportunities.
Ecological expertise
LUC's ecologists informed a desk-based review to identify priority locations for initial rainforest restoration, which were explored through consultation with landowners. Sites identified included Inversnaid, Glen Luss, and several islands. Opportunity areas were also identified for later phases of work enabling habitat restoration at a landscape scale.
Using this data, LUC identified key actions for rainforest restoration, including through the control of non-native invasive species and grazing management.
These actions ensure long-term sustainability and promote natural regeneration.
Community engagement
LUC recognised the importance of community involvement throughout the project's lifecycle.
We facilitated consultations to gather input from local residents and community groups through a webinar and survey.
Funding strategies and next steps
LUC's understanding of the funding landscape proved invaluable. We identified potential funding sources from various bodies like NatureScot and Scottish Forestry to support the project's different phases.
Additionally, LUC outlined a clear action plan for the next steps, including securing capital funding, appointing contractors, and initiating restoration works.
