Designing a Green Infrastructure roadmap
LUC developed a comprehensive Green Infrastructure (GI) Assessment to create a healthier, more resilient Pembrokeshire. The Assessment identifies opportunities for GI improvements across the county, focusing on 11 key settlements.
LUC's brief aligned with national and regional policy, including the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015, addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and health inequalities.
A greener vision for Pembrokeshire
The Assessment benefits communities, nature, and places in its recommended opportunities. Improved access to green spaces and active travel will promote healthier lifestyles, reducing healthcare burdens. A strong emphasis on biodiversity includes strategies to enhance ecological networks and create wildlife corridors.
Additionally, GI interventions will increase climate resilience by reducing flood risk, mitigating urban heat island effects, and improving air quality.
LUC's work ensures a strategic approach, guiding future investment and stakeholder collaboration. The Assessment provides a roadmap for GI planning, design, and management.
Guiding greener development
LUC produced detailed GI plans for 11 settlements, tailored to their context and needs. These plans identify opportunities for green space enhancement, considering existing assets, deficiencies, and improvement potential.
They also explore tree planting, focusing on species selection, planting locations, and maintenance.
Additionally, they address connectivity issues, proposing measures to improve linkages between green spaces and encourage active travel.
Right tree, right place
Recognising the importance of trees, LUC's Urban Tree Planting Strategies identify locations for strategic planting, considering public health benefits, ecological value, and suitability of the location.
The strategies also provide guidance on species selection, planting techniques, and maintenance.
Encouraging pollinators
Pollinators are vital to ecosystem health. LUC developed Pollinator Strategies to encourage them in Pembrokeshire's towns and cities. These propose measures to create pollinator-friendly habitats and promote public engagement initiatives.
By delivering this Green Infrastructure Assessment, LUC has equipped Pembrokeshire with the tools for a greener future.
