Rejuvenating Stanmer Park
LUC's visionary Management and Maintenance Plan (MMP) for Stanmer Park, commissioned by Brighton & Hove City Council (B&HCC), promotes the continued reinvigoration of this historic park. The work builds on LUC’s previous work securing funding for the restoration of the park’s core area.
The award-winning MMP secures vital National Lottery Heritage funding for ongoing management and maintenance, addresses the park's Heritage at Risk status, and establishes a roadmap for sustainable management practices.
Securing a sustainable legacy
The MMP provides an ambitious action plan to guide the future for Stanmer Park.
It fosters a strong sense of community, safeguards its rich heritage, promotes biodiversity, and ties into B&HCC’s City Downland Estate Plan to set a groundbreaking precedent for sustainable park management within the South Downs National Park.
Balancing historic character with modern needs
LUC's landscape-led approach integrates historic design considerations with current needs to respond to climate change, enhance and connect habitats and provide accessibility for all.
The plan advocates a whole park tree strategy, an aspiration for a green bridge connection across the A27 for adjacent neighbourhood, and improved public transport connections to reduce car use, to create a sustainable and inclusive park for all.
Safeguarding cultural legacy
The MMP prioritises the conservation and enhancement of Stanmer Park's cultural heritage features.
Actions to restore the 19th-century water catcher and the development of an updated archaeology and architecture gazetteer are set out to ensure these irreplaceable features are valued and protected for future generations.
A model for eco-conscious park management
The plan champions a range of sustainable practices, including regenerative soil management, conservation grazing, sustainable building solutions, and waste reduction measures.
This multifaceted approach positions Stanmer Park as a leader in environmentally conscious park management within the SDNP.
Engaging the community and fostering wellbeing
The MMP builds on initiatives already happening in the park to foster a continued sense of community through volunteer and educational programs involving local people and schools and strengthening partnerships between stakeholders involved in park management and maintenance.
This is to ensure that Stanmer Park continues to be a valued resource which promotes well-being, is managed efficiently and is accessible to a diverse population including local people and visitors from further afield.
"Clearly a very big piece of work and critical to the future management of Stanmer."
