Establishing Thurles Town Centre’s future blueprint
Tipperary County Council commissioned LUC to develop a Town Centre Renewal Strategy and Town Centre Masterplan for Thurles.
The project focused on local priorities and needs in producing an evidence-based ten-year action plan.
The strategy presents a community-focused vision for the town centre, providing a roadmap for sustainable development and future regeneration for Thurles.
It addresses topical issues such as climate change, social cohesion, health, and wellbeing and looks at opportunities for increasing urban greening and biodiversity.
Community-driven strategy
The Renewal Strategy reflects a collaborative effort between Tipperary County Council and the community of Thurles to present the ten-year vision, grounded in an appreciation of the key characteristics and issues within the Town Centre.
Dynamic, creative, and effective consultation techniques proved vital for gathering detailed insights, enhancing engagement, and securing support for proposals.
A collaborative approach with innovative solutions
Our methodology involved collaborating with local specialist consultants in Thurles, including town planners, archaeologists, heritage architects, and transport planners.
Leveraging innovative solutions, LUC and the wider design team addressed significant challenges prevalent in Thurles' town centre, including high levels of retail vacancies, traffic congestion, and limited green infrastructure.
The town’s historic features inspired site-specific solutions, shaping the Renewal Strategy. The consultation process prioritised key issues to be taken forward as part of a comprehensive action plan.
