Sensitive landscape design

The University of Glasgow appointed LUC as part of the team to extend its historic campus into the adjacent site of the former Western Infirmary.

Our goal was to create a vibrant new urban quarter with world-class facilities while respecting the sensitive historic context.

Transforming a historic site

The University of Glasgow's Western Campus is undergoing a remarkable transformation.

LUC's design contributes to creating a thriving new urban hub, with community spaces at its heart. Improved accessibility ensures everyone can enjoy the new public square, streets, and lanes.

A commitment to sustainability ensures the development respects the environment and encourages a healthy lifestyle.

Weaving a cohesive public realm

LUC's masterplan weaves a cohesive public realm for the University of Glasgow's expansion. We designed all landscape elements, including a large new public square, inviting streets, pedestrian lanes, and innovative rain gardens.

The design seamlessly integrates with the historic campus and surrounding area, prioritising pedestrian access.

This creates a welcoming environment encouraging exploration and interaction for students, faculty, and the wider community.

Building connections with the community

LUC fostered a collaborative spirit throughout the project. We worked closely with the University of Glasgow, its Development Partner ‘Multiplex’, various architectural-led design teams and community stakeholders to ensure the new campus reflects the needs and aspirations of the end users.

This commitment to engagement has resulted in a development that fosters connections between the university, the local community, and local businesses.

The new spaces encourage interaction and collaboration, creating a truly vibrant urban hub.

"The western campus has been conceived and designed by LUC as an exemplar of sustainable and people-centred design. The public realm and new routes are integral in achieving the ambition of bringing people together and connecting seamlessly with the wider city. The whole development aspires to deliver a world-changing campus that helps to attract the very best students and staff, and to create an ideal setting for the University to fulfil its outward-looking civic role in the city."
