Protecting special places

Wirral Metropolitan Borough Council (WMBC) commissioned LUC to review and update their local landscape designations (LLDs) to inform the Wirral Local Plan 2020 to 2035.

LUC provided a robust and up-to-date evidence base to protect Wirral's most valued landscapes.

Enhancing local decision-making

The review will help WMBC make informed decisions about planning and development within the Borough.

The new LLDs will ensure that special landscape qualities are considered throughout the planning process, contributing to a more sustainable future for Wirral.

Landscape Character Assessment

LUC built upon its previous work for WMBC by utilising the updated Wirral Landscape Character Assessment (2019).

This assessment provided a foundation for understanding the overall landscape character of the Borough and identifying potential areas for LLDs.

Developing Robust LLD Criteria

LUC drew upon its experience in undertaking LLD reviews across the UK to develop a clear and consistent set of criteria for Wirral.

These criteria considered factors like local distinctiveness, scenic beauty, and recreational value, ensuring a robust approach to LLD designation.

Fieldwork and stakeholder engagement

Through detailed field surveys and engagement with the WMBC steering group, LUC refined the boundaries of the proposed LLDs.

This collaborative approach ensured that the final recommendations reflected the specific qualities of each landscape area.

By providing a comprehensive review and clear recommendations, LUC's work will help WMBC to effectively safeguard Wirral's most cherished landscapes for future generations.
