Camberwell New Cemetery expansion completes on site
LUC has designed and project managed a new area of burial sites and a family memorial garden at Camberwell New Cemetery. The work at the cemetery in Southwark, London follows the recent completion of drainage and access improvements.
Expansion of Camberwell New Cemetery
The site was previously subject to flooding causing ground saturation and consequently made the ground unsuitable for burials. The improvements, which include new swales and underground drainage connections, alleviate any future issues.
The swales are lined with wildflowers and herbaceous planting which provides habitat and a softening to the large expanse of the burial ground. Ornamental trees line the walkways, bringing seasonal interest and create enclosure and intimacy. A new pond with seating area gives mourners a place for quiet reflection. It sits amongst graceful marginal planting tucked away in a peaceful area of the cemetery.
LUC has worked on the expansion of Camberwell New Cemetery for several years. Our work also includes improving vehicle flow, parking infrastructure and relocating and refurbishing the existing memorials on site.
Honor Oak Crematorium Baby Memorial Area
LUC also designed a new family memorial garden, working closely with South East London Sands. The garden features a bronze birdbath as a focal point in a new contemplative space where families can gather and grieve.
The soft landscape has been completely reinvigorated through the north of the crematorium site. Swathes of ephemeral meadow and grasses redefine the space. A scatter lawn area is included to spread ashes, and extensive new herbaceous perennials and shrubs refresh and enclose future memorial areas. A newly-dedicated ‘Butterfly Walk’ leads visitors through the area. Mature swamp cypresses and two large oak trees now take pride of place in the garden.
Before works began, there was no appropriate dedicated space for children’s burials or cremation within Camberwell New Cemetery or Honor Oak Crematorium. The project marks a landmark step in family bereavement services in Southwark.
