LUC completes refurbishment concepts for Chorlton Community Garden

LUC’s landscape design team has completed a portfolio of concepts for the refurbishment of the Chorlton Community Garden in Manchester.

Jacq Whitworth-Allan, Ben Wayles and Beth Houston volunteered their time under LUC’s CSER activities program. The work aspires to transform the existing public garden space into a green hub – celebrating and nurturing biodiversity, learning and social cohesion.

LUC produced a series of landscape proposals and consulted with the community to finalise the preferred scheme and visualisations. Key design aspects include:

  • raised planters for edible gardening,
  • spaces for wildflower and pollinator species,
  • the creation of a wheelchair accessible route through the garden,
  • flexible spaces with seating for community use,
  • a shelter,
  • a small operational area.

The visualisations will help the Chorlton Community Garden group to seek funding to realise the project.

Danielle Lowy from the Friends of Chorlton Community Garden Steering Group said:

“Big thank you to LUC staff for the work you have put in to support the refurbishment of Chorlton Community Garden. Between you, you have helped bring to life the options for developing this small space in accordance with the aims and functions wished for by local residents. The early concepts portfolio enabled us to clarify our ambitions as a community group.

“Having these beautiful sketches and measured plans will be a great help as we submit our ideas to Manchester City Council who own the land, as well as when applying for funding to pay for the works.”
