LUC is developing a conservation management plan for Caerlaverock Castle in Dumfries and Galloway. The site is one of Historic Environment Scotland’s portfolio of Properties in Care, managed on behalf of the nation.
Our multidisciplinary team is focusing on the landscape surrounding and contributing to the significance of the iconic triangular ‘new’ castle (pictured). It will help provide an integrated evidence base and framework for managing the nationally important archaeological remains of the ‘old’ castle and harbour complex. It will also help manage the bailey and park pale enclosures and other enigmatic earthworks currently shrouded in woodland.
The work builds on research and conservation work already underway by Historic Environment Scotland. The plan will propose a range of interventions to safeguard and better-reveal the significance of the built and archaeological assets, veteran trees and considerable biodiversity interest at Caerlaverock. It will also highlight the potential for collaborative working with neighbouring land managers and communities to achieve landscape-scale benefits.
