Our award-winning landscape design scheme at The Diana Memorial Playground in London has been recognised by National Geographic.
The playground, which opened in 2000, features in a list of National Geographic’s 12 best playgrounds around the world.
LUC was appointed by The Royal Parks as lead consultant for the design of the memorial playground. Our aim was to provide a creative and innovative play facility as a fitting tribute to Princess Diana. We created a holistic play environment to stimulate and encourage children’s imagination while respecting the sensitive, historic nature of the site.
We drew significant inspiration from J.M. Barrie’s ‘Peter Pan’ in the design and character of the space. Barrie had a long association with Kensington Gardens and was the benefactor of the first playground on the site.
By using natural materials such as timber, sand, stone, beach pebbles, glacial boulders and planting, and by avoiding the use of bright artificial colours, the playground blends seamlessly into the surrounding parkland.
