Integrate HS2 within Staffordshire landscapes

LUC works to integrate HS2 within Staffordshire landscapes

LUC has completed the second stage of a project to integrate HS2 within the special landscape at the confluence of the Trent and Sow and Cannock Chase AONB in Staffordshire.

Following our Design Principles for the railway, we have worked with local stakeholders to identify Environmental Enhancement Projects.  HS2 will fund these projects to £1.5 million through a specific enhancement fund for this important landscape.

We have prioritised, shortlisted and risk assessed a long list of around 60 ideas to develop deliverable projects providing a wide range of environmental benefits and meeting community needs.

LUC recently hosted a virtual workshop, with presentations from the Project Proposers. The projects were unanimously agreed by HS2 and the Trent Sow Review Group. Projects include:

  • restoration of the Trent Sow floodplain washlands
  • significant access improvements connecting along towpaths
  • creation of wood pasture landscape
  • community art
  • new vistas
  • local history projects

LUC will produce a report for submission to the Secretary of State to secure funding and enable implementation.
