Claypits Masterplan, Scottish Design Awards

LUC selected to speak about Health and Wellbeing research

LUC is very proud to have been selected by an international double-blind jury to speak at the Healthy City Design 2018 International Congress, which is to be held in London in October with a theme of “Equity and resilience: Creating healthy cities for all”.

Our presentation will focus on Hamiltonhill Claypits as an example of a potentially transformative green space project founded on community and stakeholder collaboration and co-design. The statistics for health inequality in the UK, including Glasgow, are shocking, showing a frighteningly high disparity between the health life prospects of people living in areas of lowest deprivation and those in highest deprivation. Free, local and attractive access to high quality green space is known to improve these statistics for all people regardless of their ranking on the deprivation indices. As such, the intelligent and community-supported activation of spaces like the ‘Claypits’ can make a real positive difference to the health and wellbeing of the residents in surrounding neighbourhoods.

‘Claypits’ is a great example of where many different partners have come together to unlock under-used green space, through simple and relatively low cost interventions. LUC is undertaking a research and development project on Health and Wellbeing and landscape. The aim of this is to better understand how to maximise the positive impacts our landscape design projects can have on the health and wellbeing of the people using them. We are developing a monitoring and assessment tool to measure the impacts of these and similar interventions; comprising data collection in the form of questionnaires, observations and site analysis.

LUC is also presenting on Health and Wellbeing and landscape at Valuing Landscape 2018: Connecting people, place and nature in September and International Healthy Cities in October.
