Thurles Town Centre Renewal Strategy and Masterplan Concep

LUC to transform Thurles, Ireland with new Renewal Strategy

LUC is working with Tipperary County Council to prepare the Thurles Town Centre Renewal Strategy and Masterplan Concept. The aim of the project is to create a 10-year action plan for the town centre.

Thurles has a unique offering. It still occupies a position on a main movement corridor of people and goods between the sorth and south of the County. Therefore it maintains high levels of trade and activity in its central area. It is also of National historical significance as the birthplace of the GAA.

We are looking to build on such characteristics. We will create a thriving and vibrant town centre which will support the future growth of the town and the needs of its residents, visitors and businesses.

LUC landscape architects Emily Beedham and Julie Hyslop, recently led a community consultation workshop in Thurles. The drop-in event included interactive activities for all ages and abilities. We presented findings from our initial online survey. It received almost 700 responses from passionate locals – almost 10% of the local population.

The community engagement results will help us to evaluate the effectiveness of the existing Thurles Town Centre and help to set priorities within our developing Renewal Strategy, ensuring it has both strong links with and support from the local community. We will also use our baseline study and fieldwork, and ongoing-consultation with local Elected Members and stakeholders.
