LUC has recently completed a Conservation Management Plan for Victoria Park in Portsmouth. Portsmouth City Council appointed us to deliver the plan as part of their second-round application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund Grants for Heritage programme.
The work is expected to deliver biodiversity enhancements to the park as a valuable heritage asset and public resource. Our report provides an understanding of the significance of Victoria Park and principles and policies for the conservation of its significance.
Maintaining and enhancing the perceived natural qualities of the park is a core principle for conservation. Whilst the park has limited intrinsic ecology and biodiversity, it is an important habitat resource for wildlife within Portsmouth’s densely built-up city centre and is valued by users as a natural space.
The core principles are reflected in the Management and Maintenance Plan which is currently underway by LUC’s Landscape Management team. This sets the framework to guide the long-term conservation and enhancement of the park’s heritage features, ecological, amenity and recreational values.
