Planning permission granted for W.B. Yeats sculpture
The London Borough of Hounslow has granted planning permission for the installation of a sculpture commemorating poet W.B. Yeats alongside two informational plaques. LUC worked since January 2020 preparing the pre-application and application stages for the W.B. Yeats Bedford Park Artwork Project.
British artist Conrad Shawcross designed the contemporary artwork, known as ‘Enwrought Light’. Yeats’ poem ‘He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven’ inspired the sculpture which comprises a vertical gold and silver fragmented structure designed to reflect light.
William Butler Yeats (1865 – 1939) was a Nobel-Prize-winning Irish poet and one of the foremost figures of 20th Century literature. Yeats has a distinct relationship with Bedford Park where he spent part of his teens and his twenties – a vital period in his development as a poet and dramatist. Bedford Park inspired Yeats with its progressive spirit, multicultural interest, cultural diversity and its medievalism.
Even though Yeats is the only Nobel-Prize-winning poet brought up in England, he does not have a monument anywhere in the country. ‘Enwrought Light’ fills this gap.
